The Pettijohn's: diaper rash - a recommendation

This actually from our end is far more than a recommendation - rather a true life saver/sanity saver/sleep saver...

A few weeks back, we were battling some of the more atrocious diaper rash I've ever witnessed, I'm talking baby blood. It was gory, sad, and every diaper change made us both cry. I hurt for my Bear. After a trip to his pedi, and some calls to triage nobody could give me any solution to our problem. I knew some pedi's recommended some prescription type ointments, but mine {grr} wouldn't nor claimed to know of any product outside of the usual Desitin, etc... fail. Huge fail.

So, as most angry and desperate mommies do, I googled {which to be very honest, I've sometimes found more answers via google than the dang doctor - I'm kind of a self-diagnoser, and quite accurate I might add :)}. Lo and behold, I came across review after review after review of Triple Paste and immediately ordered a tube online crossing my fingers that maybe this would provide some relief for my baby.

I was at Walmart that very same day, and my eyes lit UP, when I saw it in the baby aisle!!!! I likely peed myself, and bought the LAST tube they had left. I now pick one up everytime I go.

It really and truly worked baby butt wonders, and after TWO days he was cured. He had been going on a week of every cream, ointment you can think of and this stuff was miraculous in it's healing powers after only two days :) Hudson has had a very rough go at teething, and at the first sight of any redness or irritation we lather on some Triple Paste at night before bedtime and prettystarsabove, the next morning it's gone!!!

I don't often do recommendations because I always fear that what works for me may not work for you - but I can guarantee that if you too have diaper rash episodes, this will save your life and that precious tush of your babe's.

Another unsolicited recommendation.

Madonna Uses Cloth Diapers

Madonna not only uses environmentally-conscious cloth diapers on her own children, but she pushes them on others! The pop legend/mother was spotted in a Beverly Hills park while changing her son's diaper when another mother said, "Wow! I didn't even know they still made cloth diapers." Madge supposedly launched into a thirty-minute speech about the environmental disadvantages of disposables, and ended up convincing everyone in the crowd that had gathered to make the switch. There have also been recent reports of Madonna single-handedly re-freezing melting ice caps, bringing snow back to Kilimanjaro, and inventing a car that runs on love.

No Specific Cause Found Yet Linking Dry Max Diapers to Diaper Rash

From the CPSC:

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC) have reviewed consumer incident reports and other information involving Pampers Dry Max diapers. To date, the review has not identified any specific cause linking Dry Max diapers to diaper rash.

Both agencies will continue to evaluate consumer complaints related to Pampers Dry Max diapers and will provide parents with updated information if this assessment changes. As always, parents and caregivers are advised to seek the attention of a medical professional if they have any concerns about adverse health reactions.

From April through August 2010, CPSC received nearly 4,700 incident reports about diaper rash. Nearly 85 percent of these complaints came in May and then dropped off significantly. As part of its technical evaluation, staff from each agency considered certain characteristics of the diaper, including the materials used, the construction of the diaper, and heat and moisture retention issues.

In addition, CPSC staff reviewed clinical and toxicological data found in published, peer-reviewed medical literature. CPSC also critically reviewed data submitted by Procter & Gamble (P&G) and the results of a human cumulative irritation patch study conducted by P&G in May 2010. Further, chemistry, toxicology and pediatric medicine information provided by Health Canada was reviewed by CPSC.

While the investigation thus far does not find a link between the diapers and the health complaints received, CPSC recognizes the serious concerns expressed by parents. CPSC staff cannot rule out that there may exist a health concern for some babies, especially those babies that may be sensitive and develop rashes or other skin problems as a result of contact with the materials in this or other products.

Most babies exhibit diaper rash at least once in their lifetime. If parents or caregivers believe that their child is suffering from a rash that they believe to be related to a diaper, CPSC staff suggests that they discontinue use of the diaper and contact their pediatrician.

Consumers are encouraged to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of a consumer product. Easy-to-use incident report forms are available on CPSC's website at http://www.cpsc.gov/talk.html or on Health Canada's website at http://www.healthcanada.gc.ca/reportaproduct

Additional information on diaper rash can be found on the American Academy of Pediatrics website at www.healthychildren.org

CPSC is still interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product or involve a different hazard with the same product. Please tell us about it by visiting https://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx

What causes diaper rash

As a parent it’s good to know the different types of diaper rashes that can occur so you’ll know what you’re working with. If you were unaware that there were different kinds then now you will know better. There are five kinds of diaper rashes, and you may find that you’re already aware of most of them.

The sensitive skin diaper rash is quite common. We all know that some babies’ skin is more sensitive than others. Therefore they may be more likely to get diaper rash if allergy symptoms such as asthma, hay fever and baby eczema run in your family. For babies who face these kinds of symptoms a diaper rash cream or ointment is probably necessary at every changing.

The contact rash occurs after the skin has been in contact with either urine or feces. This can happen usually overnight. It’s important that you change baby’s diaper often. A contact rash usually turns skin pink or red. The rash is flat, but if you fail to treat it, it can then blister or peel. Use a cream that contains zinc oxide nightly to avoid reoccurrence.

Intertrigo is a diaper ash that forms from the rubbing action in the folds of the skin. It is usually seen in between the groin area and thighs. A bright red rash, intertrigo resembles a burn. The way to avoid or heal it is by applying a natural treatment in the dry skin folds before diapering.

Yeast rash is the fourth kind of diaper rash, which happens when yeast from the intestines infects damaged skin from diaper rash. This rash is typically seen after taking antibiotics since the friendly bacteria aren’t able to keep yeast amounts in balance. This type of rash usually appears bright red with raised bumps, and it is more severe too. It’s one that should definitely be looked at by a physician. A natural treatment that doctors prescribe for it is called pro-biotic acidophilus.

Lastly, it is also possible that your baby may have a food allergy. A red ring, which resembles a burn, appears around the anus. It makes quite a difference once you’ve found the right treatment for one of these rashes. The right ingredients are critical so note that things like olive oil and jojoba are great for your baby’s skin. They are ingredients that moisturize. Calendula, aloe vera and chamomile are added bonuses which are anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal. They increase skin healing as well as ease soreness. Baby ointments and lotions, like rash ointment with zinc oxide in it and diaper creams, can all be found at Babies R Us. Not only the baby skin products but just about everything else baby related can be found at this superstore. Find ways to prevent any type of diaper rash and save money when doing it.
